August flooding pauses Elbert County road work, temporarily closes 3 routes
Storms washed gravel from county roads and prompted temporary closures on County Roads 150, 85 and 105 as crews responded to flood damage.
Elbert County road crews paused the County Road 125 rebuild and asphalt patching after Aug. 13-15 storms washed gravel from county roads and prompted temporary closures, according to county records.
Public Works Director Monty Hankins told county commissioners Aug. 26 that the Road and Bridge Department was replacing gravel “wherever it washed away.” The commission meeting minutes say the County Road 125 rebuild and asphalt-patching projects were put on hold so more employees could respond to flood damage. The minutes do not provide a revised completion date.
County notices documented temporary closures on County Road 150 between Comanche Creek Road and 22111 County Road 150; County Road 85 between County Road 150 and Way of Peace; and County Road 105 between County Roads 82 and 90. The county’s public-notice archive later listed all three routes as open, with the County Road 105 reopening update dated Aug. 24.
A separate Aug. 15 notice said heavy rain flooded a section of County Road 73 between County Roads 112 and 98, creating what the county called a danger zone. The notice did not say the road was closed.
The Road & Bridge project page says County Road 125 Phase 2 involves reshaping and regraveling the road from south of Highway 86 to the asphalt north of Simla. The project began June 1, was expected to last several months and was to remain open to traffic; the page does not include a storm-related schedule change.
The available records do not establish whether any route remained unsafe or restricted after the reopening updates, or whether the flooding damaged bridges, disrupted school-bus routes or affected emergency response.
