The Fort Morgan City Council unanimously approved a resolution appointing Steve Brown interim police chief at its Oct. 20 meeting, the meeting transcript shows.

The appointment follows Police Chief Loren Sharp’s Sept. 30 retirement after more than 30 years with the department and nearly six years as chief, The Fort Morgan Times reported.

During public comment, Barbara Keenan urged the council to rehire Sharp, claiming that would save taxpayers more than $120,000. She attributed costs to Sharp’s separation, a search for a new chief and a possible recall election. A second speaker said a group would begin a recall effort against the mayor and three council members if Sharp was not brought back by the Nov. 3 meeting.
