Fort Morgan council advances proposed 9.5% electric-rate increase
Ordinance 1338 would apply the proposed increase to bills issued after Oct. 1, 2026, if approved. A Sept. 1 hearing and final action remain pending.
The Fort Morgan City Council unanimously advanced a proposed 9.5% electric-rate increase Aug. 18 and scheduled a public hearing and second reading for Sept. 1. The council has not adopted the increase.
The proposal is identified as Ordinance 1338. If approved, the changes would apply to bills issued after Oct. 1, 2026, the Sept. 1 council agenda says. The council’s Aug. 18 meeting record also lists the second reading and hearing for Sept. 1.
The proposal follows a May presentation by JK Energy Consultants. The city’s May 19 meeting minutes say the consultant recommended a 9.5% increase effective Oct. 1, 2026, to provide adequate revenue. The minutes also say the Light & Power department had no capital-improvement projects planned for the next two years while it rebuilt funds.
The records reviewed do not specify customer charges, including monthly, energy or demand charges, or changes by customer class. Customers should not assume their bills would rise by exactly 9.5% until the city publishes a proposed rate schedule and the council considers the ordinance.
The Sept. 1 meeting is scheduled for 6 p.m. at 110 Main St. in Fort Morgan, with live viewing available through the city’s YouTube channel. The city’s general public-comment procedures generally limit speakers to three minutes, require sign-in and require speakers to address the council from the podium.
