Lamar City Council authorized the mayor Oct. 26 to sign a letter of intent seeking up to $500,000 in state grant funding for asbestos abatement and demolition at eligible residential properties, according to the council meeting. The authorization is an initial step in the city’s grant pursuit, not an award of funding.
The Colorado Department of Local Affairs’ 2026 Community Development Block Grant program covers abating environmental contaminants in or demolishing vacant, blighted residential properties in census areas designated by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development as low- to moderate-income. Community Development Director Stephanie Strube said qualifying homeowners could work with the city, which would oversee the work, and that city-owned residential properties could also be considered.
The state’s grant notice sets Nov. 1, 2026, as the letter-of-intent deadline and Dec. 1 as the full-application deadline. It caps awards at $500,000 per grantee and $75,000 per unit. Those deadlines apply to the city’s grant process; the meeting did not announce how homeowners could seek to participate.
